This is a fantastic blank. Lori Baird and I(Dan Schrader, who tested and wrote this blog) tested this blank while surf fishing on Pensacola Beach. Our intended purpose was to use this as a light, fast rod for casting at schooling fish that were feeding near the shore. The reel seat measured at 7 and ½” up from the butt, which included the butt cap. The center of the reel foot was at 11.5”. Microwave guides size 20-6 were used for the guide train. A KastKing Kapstan IPX6 size 3000 reel with 15 pound braided line attached to a Fuji TVS reel seat was used for this test.
½ ounce, ¾ ounce, and 1 ounce casting spoons were used to test the performance, casting distance, and accuracy. The flex in the blank during the cast was quite impressive. The length of the blank as well as the flex and whipping action allowed for both straight, fast casts as well as lofting high casts. There was good sensitivity while retrieving the lures.
The ½ ounce lure was tested first. Results showed that the lure was able to cast sufficiently, but seemed too light for this blank. Perhaps with a smaller reel/line set-up, the ½ ounce would do better. This blank worked very well with the ¾ ounce spoon. I was able to obtain good casting distance with good accuracy. The blank responded well with this weight lure.
After the performance shown with the ¾ ounce spoon, I didn’t know what to expect with the 1 ounce spoon. I was pleasantly surprised with how well this blank handled it. I was able to obtain further casts, both straight and fast as well as high lofty casts. Once again, the feel and sensitivity of the blank made it a joy to use.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t fortunate enough to hook any fish on the days I used this blank, but I have no doubt it would be a blast to see the rod bend and feel the fish fight back.
